Meet Dr. Joel Sellmeyer

I’ll never forget the first time I went to a chiropractor.

St. Louis Chiropractor, Dr. Jowl Sellmeyer

I was 13 years old playing in a soccer game when I suffered a back injury that caused terrible leg and back pain. The following day, my mother called a chiropractor who was a member of our church. After a few treatments my leg and back pains were completely gone, and before I knew it, I was back on the soccer field. Even with this positive experience, I didn’t know at the time that I would end up becoming a Doctor of Chiropractic.

Along with majoring in biology at Maryville University in St. Louis, I played soccer for the college team, weight lifted at the local gym and worked at a local car dealer during nights. I considered becoming either an orthopedic surgeon or a chiropractor, but I was truly torn over the decision. I started to notice several of my soccer, weight-lifting and mechanic friends talking very positively about how chiropractic had helped them with everything from elbow pain to back problems to plantar fasciitis. They raved about how much they enjoyed their treatments and going to chiropractic offices.

I still wasn’t sold on becoming a chiropractor, so I shadowed a few St. Louis orthopedic surgeons. They all told me they would never have their children become surgeons because they despised their career choice. This pushed me to attend Logan College of Chiropractic and apply to become a chiropractor. In the process, I met Dr. Jason Blumenfeld, who mentored me for four years while I attended Logan. When I graduated form Logan in December 2011, it was an easy decision – I decided to join the Blumenfeld Family Chiropractic team.

Chiropractic Education

I am a lifelong resident of the St. Louis community, and I love my city. I graduated from Mehlville Senior High School in 2005. I then received a Bachelor of Science degree in human biology from Maryville in 2008. A year later, I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in life sciences from Logan before earning a Doctorate of Chiropractic degree from Logan in December 2011. I am in the process of completing a Masters in Sports Rehabilitation degree from Logan. I have finished a postdoctoral program in acupuncture. That program was taught by Dr. Richard Yennie, who is the president of the Acupuncture Society of America in Kansas City, Mo.

Dr. J Asks some important questions of interest to St Louis residents - Chiropractor St Louis Dr. J Asks...

How come medical doctors don't recommend chiropractic?
That's changing. Years of prejudice and bias are giving way to research showing the benefits of chiropractic care. As more and more St Louis folks seek alternatives to drugs and surgery, more and more medical practitioners are referring their patients to chiropractors.
Are chiropractors just concerned with the spine?
Our interest in the spine is because it covers the major communications conduit between your brain and your body. As a St Louis chiropractor my job is to locate areas (usually along the spine) that interfere with proper nerve communications to and from your brain. Chiropractic adjustments help restore nervous system integrity. In this way, chiropractic care can affect the function of your entire body.
